Check the license, but not the one you might expect

Arizona law specifically exempts pest management professionals from Registrar of Contractors licensing. Instead, pest control is regulated by the Arizona Department of Agriculture's Pest Management Division (PMD), which requires three separate credentials to legally operate: an individual Certified Applicator license for the technician performing the work, a Certified Qualified Applicator credential for the business's qualifying party, and a current PMD Business License for the company itself. Ask the company for their PMD business license information and confirm it against the state's public licensee records before hiring.

Questions to ask before you sign

Ask exactly what pest the treatment targets and what method will be used (bait, spray, exclusion, or a combination). Ask whether the service is a one-time treatment or an ongoing plan, and if ongoing, what the cancellation terms are. For termite treatment specifically, ask whether the company offers a re-treatment guarantee if the problem returns within a set period, since termite work in particular benefits from this kind of warranty.
