How to hire a pool contractor in Phoenix

Pools are one of the few trades in Arizona with a real two-tier licensing structure, building a new pool and servicing an existing one are different licenses, so checking the right one matters more here than for most home projects.

Check the license, and the right tier

Arizona licenses new pool construction separately from pool service and repair. A B-5 or B-6 General Swimming Pool Contractor license is required to build a new pool. Servicing or repairing an existing pool, such as pump replacement, leak repair, or resurfacing, is covered by the lighter R-6 or CR-6 Swimming Pool Service and Repair license, which has a lower experience requirement than a full build license. A business that only holds R-6/CR-6 is not licensed to build a new pool from the ground up. Ask which license the contractor holds and look it up on the ROC public license search to confirm it is active and matches your project (build versus service).

Questions to ask before you sign

For a new build, ask for a detailed written contract covering pool size, depth, gunite or alternative construction method, decking material, equipment brand and specs, and a realistic timeline, since Phoenix pool builds commonly take 8 to 12 weeks. Ask how payment is structured across build milestones, since paying the full amount upfront on a large project is a red flag. For a repair, ask for a written diagnosis before authorizing work and get the warranty on parts and labor in writing.
