A move-out clean is the empty-home reset that landlords and buyers expect, and it is often what stands between you and your full deposit. Here is what it covers, how it differs from a normal clean, and how to make it count.

What a move-out clean covers

Because the home is empty, a move-out clean reaches everything a furnished clean cannot: inside every cabinet and drawer, inside the oven, refrigerator, and dishwasher, all closets and shelving, baseboards and door frames, interior windows and tracks, light fixtures and fans, and a full bathroom and floor scrub. The goal is broom-clean-plus: ready for a final walkthrough.

How it differs from a standard clean

A standard clean maintains a lived-in home and skips the inside-everything detail. A move-out is a one-time deep clean of a vacant unit, so it takes longer and costs more (see the cost guide). Always book it after the movers are out and the unit is empty, so nothing gets missed behind furniture.

Protecting your deposit

Check your lease for any required cleaning standard, take date-stamped photos after the clean, and keep the receipt: a professional move-out invoice is strong evidence at a deposit dispute. If your landlord has a move-out checklist, hand it to the cleaner so nothing on it is skipped.

Frequently asked questions

Does a move-out clean get my deposit back?

It is the single biggest factor you control. A professionally cleaned, empty unit with date-stamped photos and a receipt removes the most common reason landlords withhold deposits. Check your lease for any specific cleaning requirement and make sure it is met.

When should I schedule the move-out clean?

After the movers are out and the home is empty, ideally the day before your final walkthrough, so nothing is missed behind furniture and the unit stays clean until handover.
